The Blackout Moblog. At least batteries still work. [evhead]

SF Weekley has a great article called "Attack of the Smartasses" which talks about the battle brewing between Friendster members and Jonathan Abrams, the creator of Friendster.

Never before have I ever seen so much dis-connect between someone offering a service and those who use it.  In fact I've spent some time thinking about what I wanted to say about this situation and article in particular.

"Mr. Asshole proves why" was one headline, another appropriate statement would be "Battle erupts, not friendly at all".  For a service which portends to be a place to meet people, Jonathan is literally telling people to get lost.

I just sure hope, (once he starts charging) that somebody stays around, for ALL our sake.  Friendster could well be the first successful social software - in this new era.   But since he hasn't shown any semblence of a business model - yet - we'll have to wait and see if his "anti-fakester" attitude will effect the system as a whole.

I like this one.  It looks like some sort of weird flower.  Edward Tufte would be proud.  And Valdis Krebs - too.

Ben Discoe has set up a system to spider the friendster site and then map the results. Source code and binaries are available.

(Thanks, Rob!)

Heavy duty white paper.  If you're into all this stuff, take a read.  It gets dense - though  I'm warning yah.  dana boyd, Dina Mehta and Ross Mayfield types will love it.

SocioTechnical Capital.

Paul Resnick, one of the most thoughtful investigators of the social aspects of smart mobs (in particular, reputation and recommendation systems) has recently blogged about a not recent but still salient paper he wrote on SocioTechnical Capital
