It's party time!!.

It's party time!!

It's actually funny that us East Coast guys never get invited to any of these West Coast social events (not that we would go - but an invitation once in awhile would just be nice).  We're not even a smart enough group to throw our own events.  Events like these makes an East Coast guy wish sometimes he lived on the West Coast.  Anyway...

If I was at the Laszlo Systems party, sipping their wine and eating their cheese, I'd be talking up the new Audioblogging player I been hinting and talking about lately and trying to get built "maybe" using Laszlo.  My agenda would be to find someone from Laszlo willing to host the Laszlo SAM radio player, similiar to what they are doing with SoundBlox.  As the wine really begins to flow, maybe Marc can drop this permalink or some hints to some player there.  After all, isn't that what they are after with the party, branding and finding new opportunities for their product.  I really need a West Coast agent!!

It's official - Party Tues night at Etech.

Laszlo Systems will be sponsoring a party at O'Reilly's Emerging technology Conference Tuesday night at the Emer3g1ng L0ft scene.

It'll start up at 10 PM - after the day's sessions are over.  Music, beer, booze and great conversation.

The next night - will also be a party there - as well.

This year's Etech is looking to be quite a scene - what with the Emergent Democracy day long pre-sessions, etc.

YUP - Harold you're gonna have ot move out here.  That reminds of teh time we got our VC funding (at MacroMind.) Part of the deal was that we had to be right off of 101 or 280 (the two major arteries out here.)  We choose SOMA (South of Market) and we became the first software company down there.

The rest if history.

And now the ashes are rising from the Phoenix. Orkut is throwing a big party tonight.

But we ARE part of a global virtual world now. It's not like Joi is throwing parties in Chiba.  No he's in Helsinki, NYC, Davos, out here and all sorts of secret hiding places.

BTW The party location has been changed.  Stay tuned for details.

This morning's train evacuation adventure (San Francisco Muni, J-Church line).

The J-Church train I was on this morning kind-of blowed-up! Actually, no explosion or anything, but a loud smashing sound followed by an immediate stopping of the train and the lights going off. After a few minutes, the conductor (driver?, engineer?) informed us "if you can hear me, we are going to have to walk out of here, this train is as dead as Julius Caesar!".

Wow - one of my co-workers on the project I'm working on - was on that train - too!  I figure it's a Bush conspiracy to make Gavin newsom look bad (along with this Hetch Hetchy thingie....)

I finally get to break somethign before Clay, Ross or jason C.

Quazal has launched a new service called Rendez-vous - a lobby service - for on-line gaming.

Welcome to the world of on-line gaming and social software.

These folks at Quazal offer an on-line gaming 'state' engine (called Net-Z), as well as MMOG (massively multi-player on-line game) infrastrcture technology (called Eterna.)  Now they've complemented their product line with a social networking kind of 'lobby service'. Totally coolio!

Provided Services

  • Authentication: manages player logins and ensures the integrity and confidentiality of data sent across the network.
  • Secure Connection: establishes a secure connection between two stations. This connection may be made either directly or routed via a secure station, which is usually the server. In conjunction with the Authentication service this service creates a secure transport layer.
  • Account Management: enables players to create lobby account(s) and allocates various access rights.
  • Matchmaking: enables players to search for and locate various gatherings in order to participate in game, competition, tournament, chat, or forum sessions, for example.
  • Competition: manages the organisation and outcomes of matches played between players as well as pertinent statistical values concerning any given competition.
  • Friends: enables players to classify their relationship with other players and to create categorized player lists, e.g. Friend, BlackListed.
  • Messaging: enables players to send messages to each other in much the same way as e-mail.
  • Persistent Store: enables players to download content from and upload content to the lobby.
  • Peer: this service is provided by one client to another and enables messages and station specific information to be shared between the two stations.
  • Cluster Management: monitors and controls configuration of the ensemble of lobby services. This service is accessed by the lobby administrator via the Rendez-Vous management console. Players do not use this service.

I wonder if they know anything about Apple's Rendezvous Probably not.  What a great example of folks in the gaming world - nothaving a lcue on what's going on in the PC world.  Probably doesn't matter though.

As a coinkidink - this sort of matching, management, tournament stuff is.... (ooooops gotta shut up now.)

 Party retort!

A party in search of a home.

So we can't do the party at the loft.  Sorry! We need another location. Laszlo is willing to pay for booze.

Anybody got any ideas?

We're a virtual marketing meme machine - ready to spew out locations and details and bring lots of folks to stand around and intellectualize on FOAF, social networking and - scutters.  But until we have a safe roof over our heads, we're hanging in the parking lot - smoking cigs and wondering "what are we doing in San Diego at some expensive hotwel anyway?"

What's wrong with Danny O'Brien's backyard?

:-)

new FOAF intro article. Leigh Dodds has written an excellent Introduction to FOAF for XML.com. It gives a good technical overview of the whole project, working through some examples on data-merging and relationship typing. Thanks Leigh! [RDFWeb and Friend of a Friend (FOAF)]

foaf! This is a great intro to FOAF.

Leigh brings up Eric Vitiello's Relationship Scehma which enables finer granual levels of realtionships - than just friend or not.  That's so black and white.

This ability to define finer levels of relationships is exactly what Doc was talking about - and asking for, as others have asked in the past.

Well guess what?

That's exactly what our PeopleAggregator.com social network does!  It allows for defining 7 levels of realtionship:

      - close friend

         - friend

             - acquaintance

                 - know by reputation

                        - know in passing

                              - don't know at all, but want to know

                                         - related

This is what I'll be talking about and showing at Etech.

BTW PeopleAggregator is being created by Eric Sigler - and he sure could use some help. It's completely open source and available on SourceForge as PeepAgg.

Don is an old friend - we worked together at Kalieda Labs. He helped create the Sims.

Thanks Seb!  I can use this - that's for sure.
