This is from Chris Schmidt....

Word press has been getting a lot of word in the press about being "the" replacement package for MT. However, by default, there's no FOAF input or output, and that's never a good thing.

So, I present to those of you who may be switching, a presentable version of FOAF for WordPress. Basic, as it only spits out the values that you can set in wp-admin: admittedly minimal. However, it is something. Anyway, I figured some of you might be switching over - mortenf, specifically, asked for some help on the topic.

So, http://crschmidt.net/wphack/profile2.txt is how to set up a profile page - and FOAF - in your WordPress blog.  I'll be working with the wordpress developers to clean this up and get it into the Core version of wordpress, but not until after the 1.2 release, as they've got enough on their hands as is.

First FOAFNet code available. Posted by: Paul

The emerging industry cosortium FOAFnet, that Tribe is proudly a member of, now has its first source code available for download.

If you would like to join FOAFNet and get access the the Java middleware framework for doing FOAF import please visit the FOAFNet wiki or contact me directly.

The wiki is located at

www.socialtext.net/foafnet/index.cgi

[Tribe.net: FOAF]

OK we can start to slowly talk about what we've been waiting to annouce for a while now.

All us commercial FOAF folks banded together and said: "you know, we love the idea of rdf, we love the idea of FOAF - but this whole thing is too dam open ended.  We can't make products out of a spec that's so open ended."

So we closed the gap.  We defined a real simple subset of FOAF and we're wrapping that around some user interface guuideline to guarentee the same results for FOAF import/export - no matter where you go.

This is unofficial (of course) but BlogWare, PeopleAggregator, Tribe, Ecademy, Mydentity, CivicSpace, Always On, Affnity Engines (InCircle), SocialText, Drupal, Technorati.

Those still considering (or waiting for the official word) include WordPress, SixApart, Plink, Scionet, LiveJournal and Spoke.  Everyone is welcome.

We'll officially announce it once Paul Martino gets back from getting married.  Congrats to Paul BTW!

Working demos at announcement.

Usage sceario = I click to register, I'm asked "do you have FOAF", I point them at my FOAF.

Three lists of names come up:

- these foks are already in this system

- these folks who are not in the system and we have their emails (so we can auto-register them)

- these folks who are not in the system but we don't have their emails

Perhaps some checkboxes to allow you to delete folks from the import at the last minute (that's optional) - and that's it!

For Export - all we'll ask for is an opt-in checkbox (default off) which says "export via FOAF?" (or something like that.)

That's what the FOAFnet is.  That's it - real simple.  Just:

- name

- email

- picture (of your face presumably)

- list of friends - and their FOAFs

The post above is from the soon to be married Paul - announcing the example Java code - for the FOAFnet middleware.   Yes folks FOAFnet wil have it's own open APIs as well as open data structure.

Look Matt - two indents (sorry I still hate <blockquotes>).

BTW If you click on Paul's link - you'll find it password protected.  If you're intersted in joining FOAFnet - drop me a line.

Dude - blockquotes are so HTML.  Have I told you how much I hate HTML?

How we were set backwards in 1994 - afer all those years of moving forward towards beinging media into people's lives? Napster kind of made upf or that - but in general - the HTML web is a straw sipping dial-up waiting, lo-res experience.

I'm sorry - I just can't draw myself into accepting that - I'm too dam old.

Anyway - I owe you a phone call - but I through I'd spell out in public what we'll talk about in private (after I get back from seeing my middle son star in "Oklahoma".)

1.  Folks have been asking for FOAF in WordPress.  You joined our FOAFnet Wiki - so you must be interested.  BTW I'm totally jazzed that you're supporting ESF and ENT!

2. I also have been dealing with other blogging tools who have been trying to figure out "how much" FOAF to support.

3.  Some blogging tools are adding friends capabiltiies, others adding groups, still others have blog tools coupled to content sites and game databases.  So it's happening. Just as I predicted.  For every kind of everything - they'll be a social network/digital identity play associated with it.

4.  So you get to decide how far you want WordPress to go.  You can just make your FOAF the 'About Me' page. That's cool.  Info on the blogger, easily discoverable. No more confusion over who's the blogger (unless of course the blogger doesn't want anybody to KNOW who he/she is.)

5.  Or you can go further.  Build basic friends or groups - or go whole hog - build the entire PeopleAggregator within WordPress.  Commons page.  Public and Private pages.  Group, multiple relationships, multiple personalities.  All for the taking.

A picture named jy.jpgFeedster query for coverage of yesterday's developer meeting at Technorati. There doesn't seem to be one weblog that's gathering all the coverage. Don Park has a picture of JY Stervinou from France who was in SF at the meeting, with Loic, who is Joi's guy in Europe. A lot of geography in that sentence. Christian Crumlish took notes. Wish I could have been there. I'm in NYC meeting with people in the publishing industry tomorrow. Busy busy. Bing bing? [Scripting News]

So Steve says to me: "folks think FOAF is about rdf - they don;t want rdf."  I say "but dude, we're making sure that FOAFnet is a simple subset, limnited vocab - so it'll LOOK like XML.  Real simple." "Good" says Steve, "cause Jon Udelll says just use what's there."

Which is exactly what we're doing with FOAF  using what's there - an open standard for digital identity wrapper.  Put whatever you want inside of it - but just keep the wrapper the same.

Steve is one of those rare commodities - a press guy who knows what he's talking about.

Here's me and Steve - last night.

Wish Dave Winer could have been there.

It was great to meet JY and see Loic again.  He kept saying "it's just a communication problem."  But I wouldn't call Loic Joi's guy - I kind of think fo Loic as - our guy in Europe.  Along with Paolo.

software garden launches Servertest 1.0. and i understand he's put some thought into the licenses [anil dash's daily links]

Maybe Mr. Bricklin should have put some mroe time into writing code. Charging money for 400 line so fperl - is called chutzpah.  I'm sorry - I don't care how famous he is - he's got balls to want money for something you can find in 20 other products as a feature.

But god bless him though. Remember it was his deal with Trelix and Blogger that saved Blogger and..... [the rest is history.]

RSS-ENT. Easy News Topics - RSS 2.0 Module aka RSS ENT. [Photo Matt]

This is why Matt Mullenweg is kicking ass. he supports really smartt things - like ENT.  Why couldn't the Trotts do that?

Do you know how many times Matt or Paolo tried to get in touch with theTrotts?  Don't ask!  For over a year!

I attended the first Technorati developers conference. Lots of coolio people were there.

Me, Doc, Loic and Dave had fun.  Not much to say about the conference except that Technorati is the leading blogosphere data mining play.  We've built it into the PeopleAggregator.  Everey PeepAgg member gets a Technorati Cosmos and every Technorati customer gets a PeepAgg account.

Needless to say I pitched FOAF and got into a debate with Steve Gilmor about why we can't just make the FOAFnet XML compatible.  I told him "don't worry - it'll look just like XML."

Moving Forward. I'm moving to San Francisco. That probably bears some explanation. As I'm sure all of you know, I work for... [Anil Dash]

I'll save you all the gory details.

We won - SF gets the best and the brightest. This is the mecca of technology and if you want to be doing business in technology, you have to be right off of 101 or 280.  That's what they told me in 1987 - when we moved out here and it's still true today.

I myself am looking forward to the new, humbler, fast reacting SixApart.  I got to tease Loic about it tonight and despite Doc's claims of gloom - I still think SixApart is a major player.

So hopefully they'll be a key player in the FOAFnet..
